A supply vessel faced a problem with her Oily Water Separator bilge alarm. The alarm in question was, a Deckma OMD-2005. The unit wasn’t working correctly and was giving incorrect readings. On the instruction of the owner (Fairmount), we were requested to attend the vessel at Den Helder the following day.
After inspection of the existing situation and a discussion with the Chief Engineer and superintendent it was decided to replace the existing unit with a new bilge alarm from Brannstrom. This was the model Bilgemon 488. The old Deckma bilge alarm was disassembled from the Oily Water Separator and after some modifications the new Brannstrom Bilgemon 488 was installed.

After completion of the installation, the unit was powered up to ensure that everything was operational and working as intended. Once the initial operation was complete an instruction was given to the Chief engineer and crew prior to handing over the certificate of compliance.
The bilge alarm compliance certificate is valid for 5 years, with the main advantage of the Bilgemon 488 is that the owner can purchase a new measuring sensor which the crew can easily fit by themselves. This procedure is to loosen 2 screws remove the old sensor and then fit the new sensor in place. The motherboard will recognize this new cell after installation and record this in the data.
This saves the owner all the costs for an attendance of a service engineer, particularly when vessels are trading in remote areas.
